Boone County Public Safety Joint Communications asks residents to keep in mind the agency's non-emergency phone number (573) 442-6131, when reporting the discharge of fireworks. A number of locations in Boone County, including the City of Columbia, prohibit the discharge of fireworks.
"We usually see an increase in calls during the holiday week, with a good deal of them involving fireworks", said Operations Manager Brian Maydwell. "We want people to call 9-1-1 if fireworks cause injury or trigger a fire, but the non-emergency line should be used to report that someone is discharging fireworks."
Maydwell noted that non-emergency calls into 9-1-1 lines can prevent actual emergency calls from being connected in a timely manner, this potentially delays service to someone who really needs help. The non-emergency number for PSJC is (573) 442-6131.
