The City of Columbia will offer TreeKeeper classes Feb. 11, Feb. 13 and Feb. 15 at the ARC, 1701 W. Ash. Residents who have an interest in the environment, like to work outside and want a hands-on way to volunteer in parks may be interested in becoming a TreeKeeper.
TreeKeepers start by attending classes where they learn about trees, including identification, planting, pruning, insects, diseases and soils. The 2014 class will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 11, and Thursday, Feb. 13, and from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 15.
Following the coursework, participants are asked to share 36 hours of service on City of Columbia tree projects held Saturday mornings. In 2013, 52 volunteers participated in TreeKeeper projects, sharing 334 hours of service.
Space in the course is limited. To enroll in TreeKeepers or find out more, visit the city's website or contact the City's Volunteer Programs at 874-7499 or volunteer@GoColumbiaMo.com.
