Columbia Public Works crews worked overnight spreading salt to fight the dangerous icy road conditions and keep 1st and 2nd priority routes passable for customers. Road conditions were extrememly dangerous overnight, and shear ice accumulation led to numerous reports of collisions throughout the city. Crews report road conditions have improved with the salt treatment, but roads are still slick. A full crew is working on roadways this morning, continuing to spread salt on 1st and 2nd priority routes to keep them passable, and may switch to a salt and cinder mixture for roadways if conditions are right.
Forecasts predict the freezing rain will taper off by mid-day today, but roads and sidewalks will still remain very slick. Customers that have to travel should use extreme caution and leave plenty of space between vehicles.
