Contact: Battalion Chief Brad Fraizer, Fire Marshal
Monday through Friday 8am - 5pm
Shortly after 2:30 p.m. today, the Columbia Fire Department responded to a report of a possible hazardous material in the creek near the intersection of W. Parkway Drive and W. Broadway in central Columbia. The 9-1-1 caller stated there was an unknown green substance coming from a storm drain culvert.
Columbia firefighters arrived on the scene to find the water in the small creek to be a neon-green color. Firefighters tested the water and determined it did not contain any hazardous material. Crews searched for the source of the strange color and, after approximately thirty minutes, determined a contractor was conducting a dye test of the storm water system on North McBaine Avenue.
Non-toxic colored dye is often used to test underground pipes for leaks in the system.
