With the school year coming to an end, many youth are anxious to explore summer volunteering opportunities. Youth in Action is an exciting way for teens ages 12-15 to contribute to their community this summer, make new friends and learn new skills. The program includes a variety of supervised and structured volunteer activities with organizations throughout Columbia.
Participants choose the opportunities in which they would like to volunteer. Scheduled projects include helping with the Humane Society, the Family Fun Fests, Lunch in the Park and the Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri.
The City of Columbia's Volunteer Programs will host two informational sessions about Youth In Action and the 2013 summer program. These sessions are open house style; interested youth and their parents or guardians may attend and sign up for volunteer activities from 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, at the City Hall mezzanine conference room, 701 E. Broadway, or from 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, at the ARC, 1701 West Ash.
For more information regarding the program, contact Tracy Parks, 2013 Youth In Action intern, at 808-2112 or tdparks@GoColumbiaMo.com. More information on the program, including an application and a list of summer activities, can be found on the city's website at www.GoColumbiaMo.com.
In addition to Youth In Action, the "2013 Directory of Summer Youth Volunteer Opportunities" includes many other ways for young people to share their time. The directory features organizations that welcome youth volunteers and can be found on the City's website.
