Early last year 2010 the City started discussions regarding the Missouri Quality and Malcolm Baldrige Awards. Since then, Council and Staff have been actively involved in identifying the components of Columbia's Journey to Excellence. In fact, the Journey is not about receiving the awards but the benefits of process, participation, and performance.
On September 20, 2010 the Council officially adopted the following Vision Statement and Core Values: View PDF

customers, communication, integrity, teamwork and resources.
Customers: We exist to provide the best possible service to our customers-- the men, women, children, and businesses who make up our community.
Communication: We listen to the members of our community and respond with clear, compassionate and timely communication to build awareness, share information and open ourselves to ideas and suggestions.
Integrity: We expect our employees to be ethical, honest and responsible. Our customers deserve nothing less.
Teamwork: We achieve results through valuing diversity and partnerships within our own organization as well as the community. Each person’s contribution is critical to our progress.
Resources: We develop and empower our employees to serve the community to the best of their ability. We are responsible with the resources the community entrusts to us.
