In July, 1998 the City Council approved an ordinance which established a Historic Preservation Commission. The Council recently appointed seven Commission members, who conducted their first meeting on September 28, 1998.  Some of the Commission's duties are:

  • To investigate and recommend to the Council the implementation of a broad package of incentives and benefits to encourage redevelopment of historically significant structures;
  • To initiate, develop and supervise surveys to identify historically and architecturally significant properties;
  • To review applications for the designation of landmarks and historic districts in the City.
  • To advise and assist Columbia residents and owners of real property on physical and financial aspects of preservation, renovation, rehabilitation and reuse;
  • To encourage nomination of landmarks and historic districts to the National Register of Historic Places;
  • To establish and maintain an ongoing survey and inventory of historic properties in accordance with standards and guidelines established by the Secretary of the Interior's Standards For Preservation Planning, Identification and Evaluation.
