For over 50 years the
City of Columbia has been committed to providing public health services through its
Health Department.
These services prevent epidemics and the spread of disease, protect against environmental hazards, promote healthy behaviors, prevent injuries and illness, assure the quality and accessibility of health services and monitor the health of the population.
What is WIC?
- a supplemental nutrition program for women, infants and children
- provides services to pregnant women, new mothers, infants, and children up to five years of age who are at nutritional risk, based on medical and income eligibility

primary services provided:
- health screening and risk assessment
- nutrition education and counseling
- breastfeeding promotion and support
- referrals to services specific to individual needs such as health care providers and social services agencies
- issuing food instruments for supplemental nutritious food prescription
