The City Clerk is accepting applications for the following boards and commissions. Applications must be in the City Clerk's Office, 2nd Floor of City Hall, 701 E. Broadway, by noon, Friday, September 3, 2010. Applicants can either complete and submit the online application to the City Clerk directly from the internet or can complete the PDF format online and then print, sign, and submit it by mail to the City Clerk's office for processing.
BOARD OF ELECTRICAL EXAMINERS: 1 vacancy with term to expire August 1, 2013. Must be a layperson. The Board is empowered to give examinations for electricians’ licenses and certificates. Meetings, when necessary, are held the third Thursday of the month at 4:30 p.m.
BOARD OF MECHANICAL EXAMINERS: 1 vacancy with term to expire June 17, 2011. Must be a general contractor not in the HVACR business and be a resident of the City of Columbia. The Board is empowered to give examinations for mechanical heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration licenses and certificates. Monthly meetings held on the second Tuesday of the month at 5:00 p.m.
BUILDING CONSTRUCTION CODES COMMISSION: 3 vacancies with terms to expire August 1, 2013. Three alternate members (to serve in absence of the regular member) are needed from each of the following categories: professional engineer (experience in electrical/mechanical), master plumber and landlord. The Commission periodically reviews and makes recommendations relating to building construction codes. Monthly meetings held on the fourth Monday of the month at 4:30 p.m.
COMPREHENSIVE PLAN TASK FORCE: 1 vacancy. Consideration will be given to prior involvement in the visioning process, service on a City commission, professional credentials or participation in a civic, business, or professional organization. The Task Force advises and assists the Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council on all phases of the Comprehensive Plan development, including citizen involvement, public education and outreach, recruitment of volunteers and review of interim products. Monthly meetings held on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
CONVENTION AND VISITORS ADVISORY BOARD: 7 vacancies with terms to expire September 30, 2012. Three must be owners or operators of a hotel or motel within the City limits. All shall have demonstrated by past activities an interest in the convention and tourism business. The Board shall advise the City on the use of the funds created by the hotel and motel tax. Monthly meetings held on the last Monday of the month at 12:00 p.m.
HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION: 1 vacancy with term to expire March 1, 2011. Members shall have demonstrated a strong commitment to human rights and a belief in the principles of equal opportunity. The Commission advises the Council on human rights issues and reviews and makes decisions regarding complaints of discrimination filed with the City. Monthly meetings held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m.
INTERNET CITIZENS ADVISORY GROUP: 2 vacancies with terms to expire October 15, 2013. Members assess the user friendliness and effectiveness of the City’s Internet activities. The Group makes recommendations to staff and Council on resource priority for the City’s effective utilization of the Internet. Meetings held every other month on the third Wednesday of the month at 5:00 p.m.
MAYOR’S COMMITTEE ON PHYSICAL FITNESS: 1 vacancy with term to expire on November 30, 2011. The Committee educates the public about the importance of regular physical fitness activity and promotes, initiates and encourages local physical fitness and sports programs in the community. Monthly meetings held as needed; quarterly meetings held the first Tuesday of the designated month at 12:30 p.m. (MAYOR’S APPOINTMENT)
NEW CENTURY FUND BOARD: 3 vacancies with terms to expire September 30, 2013. One must be a CPA, attorney or bank trust officer that has experience in the operation of a 501(c)(3) corporation or in the administration of a charitable trust. All should have an interest in the future of the City of Columbia and the funding needs required to achieve future success. All must be current residents and qualified electors of the City of Columbia. The New Century Fund, Inc. is a Missouri not-for-profit corporation. Meetings held on call.
PERSONNEL ADVISORY BOARD: 2 vacancies with terms to expire September 30, 2013. Members shall have significant, substantive knowledge of social, legislative, political, and administrative factors affecting personnel management and employee relations. All must be residents and registered qualified voters of the City. In addition, members must not hold a lucrative position in City government nor any other lucrative public office during their terms. The Board advises the Council on its findings, opinions, various conclusions and recommendations on the status of the personnel system. Meetings held on call.
SOURCE WATER PROTECTION PLAN TASK FORCE: 3 vacancies. Consideration will be given to prior service on a City board or commission, professional credentials or participation in a civic, business, or professional organization. The Task Force will assist in the preparation of a Source Water Protection Plan as outlined by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources’ “Guidelines for Developing a Source Water Protection Plan.” Meetings held on call.
