3M – Columbia

3M Columbia’s sustainable achievements include recycling over 2400 tons from 2015-2018, eliminating 200 tons/year of landfill waste by converting materials into energy,and substantially reducing their electric consumption by nearly 24,000 megawatt hours.  Their efforts are routinely communicated to employees and have been presented at local and global conferences. A.L. Gustin Golf Course

A.L. Gustin Golf Course was the first university golf course to become fully certified with Audubon International.  Since 2010, they have adjusted their mowing practices to reduce fuel use, planted native wildflowers and created a pollinator habitat to benefit bees, birds, butterflies and insects.  Gustin also partners with local organizations to provide educational opportunities to kids. View the A.L. Roots N Blues N BBQ Festival

Roots N Blues continues to expand its sustainability practices each year by encouraging alternative transportation though the bike corral and shuttle services.  The festival has reduced its overall waste by providing refill stations, recycling options and tons of educational signage for guests. They also offer incentives for vendors who facilitate green practices such as composting.  View the RnBnBBQ video to learn more.

ASI Flex

ASI Flex completed an energy renovation project on their Broadway Professionals Park property.  In addition to LED lighting and HVAC upgrades, ASI installed battery storage, along with a 126kW solar roof/carport which is visible from Broadway.  These improvements have reduced their electric consumption by approx. 230,000 kWh/year. Wilson’s Fitness

Wilson’s Fitness renovated their facilities to include dual-tilt rooftop solar, ice energy storage tanks, a new chiller system, LED efficient lighting and HVAC automation to reduce their peak demand.  These improvements have reduced their annual electric consumption by approx. 105,400 kWh. Columbia Housing Authority

The Columbia Housing Authority completed a major overhaul to its facilities by installing ground-source geothermal heating and cooling system, energy-efficient double-pane windows, LED lighting upgrades and energy-star appliances.  These improvements not only increased efficiency, it reduced the utility expenses of the tenants. Columbia Independent Schools

Columbia Independent Schools completed the first local PACE-funded energy project and has reduced its annual energy consumption from the grid by over 180,000kWh.  CIS has demonstrated that projects like these are achievable and is setting a positive example for students attending an environmentally-conscious school.   View the CIS video to learn more.

The Food Bank

The Food Bank and Central Pantry’s creative approach to food storage and transportation has drastically reduced its food waste.  With the help of their new refrigerated trailer, Central Pantry can store an additional 312,000-390,000 lbs of food per year, reducing food waste from local retailers and providing nutritional meals to over 10,000 residents.   View the Food Bank’s video to learn more.

Hair Therapy Salon

Hair Therapy became the first salon in Missouri to partner with a national organization which specializes in diverting salon waste.  Since then, Hair Therapy have diverted almost 600 lbs of salon waste including bottles, boxes and chemicals.   View the Hair Therapy video to learn more.

For their continued efforts in reusing through artistry, composting, recycling and reducing single-use items, True/False earned the 2018 Mayor’s Award.  Their Green Team has achieved a diversion rate of over 87%  and continues to educate staff, students, volunteers and Fest goers on the importance of environmental responsibility.

A 2018 Environmental Stewardship Award  was awarded to the CPS Science Department for surpassing its goal of removing one million invasive bush honeysuckle plants from Missouri and collecting long-term plant diversity data. The CPS Science curriculum has increased the number of school gardens, field trips and projects allowing students to take a hands-on approach to learning.

For their countless efforts to restore and protect the environment through community outreach and educational opportunities, the Columbia Audubon Society has earned a 2018 Environmental Stewardship Award. By providing a beautiful landscape for visitors and increasing native habitat for a variety of pollinators, they have made a lasting impact on our community.

Truman VA Hospital has implemented a variety of practices throughout their facility in order to be more environmentally sustainable, earning them the 2018 award for Innovative Best Practices. They have undergone 3 expansions constructed to LEED Silver standards, reuse or recycle approximately 33% of their solid waste and provide a carpooling/van share services to employees.

This unique partnership worked outside the box to take advantage of tax credits and other energy efficiency incentives to install a 45.5 kWh rooftop solar panel system.  Not only has the collaboration decreased the annual energy usage for Cosmo Clubs, it has also allowed Central Bank to assist other organizations with similar projects.

MU Campus Facilities

Campus Facilities has led the charge for sustainability on campus and has earned a 2018 Pollution Prevention Award. The University of Missouri -Columbia has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 51% since 2008 and is on track to reach a 60% reduction by 2022.  MU is recognized as a national leader in renewable energy with its portfolios of biomass, wind and solar which now exceed 39% of annual campus energy use.

Sustain Mizzou earned the 2018 Resource Conservation Award  for its extraordinary efforts to promote a sustainable way of life through education, collaboration and local action.  This student run non-profit organizes events such as stream clean-ups, food/clothing drives, e-waste recycling and weatherization projects and Sustainability Week.

For its incredible office space renovations which improve its efficiency and reduce its strain on the local energy grid, True Media earned a 2018 Resource Conservation Award. They have reduced its consumption of natural gas by nearly 41% in winter months and use a custom tailored HVAC control logic which prevents demand spikes by limiting the number of units in use at any given time.

Services for Independent Living

For their continued efforts to recycle medical devices and help out the less fortunate, Services for Independent Living earned the 2017 Mayor’s Award. Columbia Insurance Group

The 2017 Environmental Stewardship Award for a business was awarded to the Columbia Insurance Group. By going to all LED lighting, replacing inefficient transportation and HVAC systems and implementing environmentally friendly standards to their employees, they have been able to really make an impact. Missouri River Relief

For their countless efforts to clean up the Missouri River, Missouri River Relief has earned the 2017 Environmental Stewardship Award for an organization. By cleaning up 876 tons of trash and heading up clean up projects along the river all the way to South Dakota, they have made a lasting impact. Dana Incorporated

Dana Incorporated has implemented a variety of innovative techniques to be more environmentally sustainable, earning them the 2017 award for Best Innovative Practices by a business. They have gone to all LED lighting inside, removed air leaks from the facility, exceeded their goal for waste diversion and completed a heat reclaim project. True/ False Film Festival

The organizational winner for the 2017 Best Innovative Practices was the True/False Film Festival. Their efforts to reuse and recycle throughout their festival, including a landfill diversion rate of over 90%, have shown their dedication to being environmentally sustainable. Columbia Mall

The practices of the Columbia Mall that have made such a big impact on the community and environment are what earned them the 2017 Pollution Prevention Award. They have been able to reduce emissions by 26% since 2009, which is enough to power 181 homes in the community for 1 year. Check out the Columbia Mall video to learn more.

Fretboard Coffee

Fretboard Coffee achieved the 2017 Resource Conservation Award through many different sustainability practices. A few of their several practices include using organic beans, biodegradable bags and food containers, furniture made from recycled materials, and local vendors. Columbia Center for Urban Agriculture

The Columbia Center for Urban Agriculture was awarded the Mayor’s Award for 2016. They earned this honor by serving over 1,000 people with zero waste, helping build 92 family gardens, and continuing to expand their outdoor classroom program with the Columbia Public Schools. Schneider Electric

Schneider Electric’s efforts to cut back on energy and reduce waste earned them the 2016 Mayor’s Award. During 2015, Schneider Electric went to all LED lighting, reduced waste by 97% and began using a garden project at their facilities. View the Schneider Electric video to learn more.

Logboat Brewery

Logboat Brewery’s sustainability efforts in their beer production and packaging made them our winner for 2016 Environmental Stewardship.  Their efforts include saving hundreds of gallons of water, donating leftover grain to local farmers, and using aluminum cans to allow greater chance of recycling. The Broadway Hotel

The Broadway Hotel took home the award for the 2016 Innovative Best Practices. The first LEED Certified Hotel in Columbia was able to significantly cut both water and energy usage throughout 2015.  By greatly reducing their emissions, 3M was awarded with the Pollution Prevention Award for 2016. They reduced energy by 33.4% per pound by shutting down equipment during down hours, re-engineering air handling systems and more. View the 3M  video to learn more.

Services for Independent Living

The Columbia Center for Urban Agriculture earned the 2015 Environmental Stewardship Award for their efforts throughout the Columbia community. They advocate for sustainable local food systems, allow opportunities for low-income families to garden and create outdoor classrooms for local schools.  Check out CCUA’s video to learn more.

The Lawn Company

In 2015, the Lawn Company achieved the Environmental Stewardship Award through their organic lawn care work. Their promotion of alternatives to chemical lawn care and education about organic lawn care practices to the community were reasons why they were chosen as winners.  Check out The Lawn Company’s video to learn more.

OHM: SOA & CM Engineering

With a projected EnergyStar rating of 99/100, OHM: SOA & CM Engineering won the 2015 Innovative Best Practices Award. Their practices include reusing rainwater, using geothermal systems, and constructing their office of reused metals. Check out OHM’s video to learn more.

Columbia Area Career Center

The Columbia Area Career Center took home the award for 2015 Innovative Best Practice. Their efforts include training students to refurbish products and distributing the refurbished products throughout the community.  Check out the Career Center’s video to learn more.

In 2015, Shelter Insurance earned the Pollution Prevention Award. They installed energy saving technology throughout their office including LED lighting and solar panels, and even redesigned their Shelter Fountain to be more efficient. Columbia Art League

The winner for the 2015 Resource Conservation Award was the Columbia Art League. By switching to LED lighting, using a “water bar” at their Art in the Park event and using a solar powered stage, they took home the award.  Check out CAL’s video to learn more.

Main Squeeze Natural Foods Café

Main Squeeze was the 2015 winner for the Resource Conservation award. They compost 100% of food waste, serve food from local farms, and have their furniture made from reused materials.  Check out Main Squeeze’s video to learn more.

Schneider Electric

Schneider Electric earned the 2015 Resource Conservation Award with their efforts to recycle and cut back on waste. In 2015 they increased their recycling rates substantially and set a goal for zero waste throughout the year. Check out Schneider Electric’s video to learn more.

Quaker

Quaker achieved the 2015 Resource Conservation Award for their sustainability efforts. Reducing fuel, water and electricity, installing solar panels, and building community awareness were a few of the things they did to achieve this award.  Check out Quaker’s video to learn more.
