News
Columbia Police Department
The City of Columbia received a total of $25.2 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to address the public health and economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The first half of this funding is designated for initiatives related to homelessness, community violence, behavioral crisis care mental health services, and workforce development. The City Council has requested the second half be allocated to priority areas identified by the community.
During June 2022, City employees surveyed every section of our community. Following the survey, we conducted focus groups. We wanted to hear from everyone who lives, works, or receives services in Columbia. Thanks to everyone who participated in this process.

Juneteenth History and Celebration
Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people were freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end of slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday.
The day was recognized as a federal holiday in 2021 when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law. Columbia City Council voted to approve the holiday in September 2021 and first observed the holiday in 2022.

Save a Life: Naloxone education and distribution event hosted by Spectrum Health Care and Welcome Home
In partnership with the Boone County Overdose Response Coalition and Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services (PHHS), Spectrum Health Care, and Welcome Home will host a Save a Life: naloxone education and distribution event on Thursday, April 25. The event will be from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at 1123 Wilkes Blvd., Columbia (at the corner of Wilkes Boulevard and Fay Street). No registration is required.
After the event, from 6:30 to 7 p.m., PHHS staff will be present to provide information and brief training for individuals who aren’t able to be at the formal presentation. Both the formal and informal training will include recognizing the signs of an opioid overdose and an explanation of how to use and access naloxone nasal spray.
Save a Life is a series of monthly, free-to-the-public events that feature education and conversation around how members in the community can help to prevent opioid overdose deaths through the use of naloxone, also known as Narcan® (a drug that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose).
This event is funded in part by contract # DH240054280 between PHHS and the State of Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. As a result of the continued partnership between PHHS and the Missouri Institute for Mental Health (MIMH), NARCAN® will be available to participants of the event at no cost.

Public meeting to discuss sewer improvement project near Sunset Drive
The City of Columbia Sewer Utility is accepting public comments regarding a proposed sewer improvement project near Sunset Drive, Prospect Street and Crestland Avenue.
The Utility is proposing to replace the privately maintained sewer system for property owners in the area. If approved, the Utility will construct a public sanitary sewer to serve these customers.
These proposed improvements are part of the Utility’s Private Common Collector Elimination project, started in 2008. Private common collectors are major sources of inflow and infiltration of stormwater into the sewer system. By replacing the outdated, private sewers and connecting these properties into the publicly maintained sewer, the City can reduce the occurrence of backups and overflows.
During the meeting, interested parties will have the opportunity to review preliminary plans, ask questions, make comments and complete a public comment form.
